ACOST3 AND PCOST2 INSTRUCTIONS ACOST3.XLS and PCOST2.XLS are spreadsheet programs designed to run in Microsoft Excel or Borland Quattro Pro. In addition there is a stand alone version of each program (ACOST3.EXE and PCOST2.EXE) written in Microsoft QuickBasic to run on any PC. ACOST3 uses unit information turned into the Oregon Smoke Management system to calculate consumed tonnage for broadcast burns. PCOST2 uses procedures outlined in the Smoke Management Directive to calculate total tons of slash in landings or unit piles. The calculations are based on accepted methods documented in the Oregon Smoke Management Directive (1-4-1-601). ACOST3 DATA ENTRY Regional Area: Enter WO for western Oregon or EO for eastern Oregon. Unit #: Enter the FACTS number used to track the unit (12 digits). AC: For planning enter the number of acres planned to be burned. For accomplishment enter the number of acres actually burned. These should be acres which actually had fire on them. Harvest Date: Enter the month and year that 70 percent of the unit was cut. For example if 70 percent of the unit was cut by May 1993, enter 5/93. Snow Off: Enter the month that the snowpack left the unit, if a snowpack did not exist on the unit enter 0. Ign Dur: For planning enter the planned amount of minutes for ignition duration. For accomplishment enter the actual ignition duration. % Slp: Enter the actual average slope of the unit. DSR: For westside units enter the days since half an inch of rain fell in a 48 hour period. For eastside units enter the days since quarter inch of rain fell in a 48 hour period. This information is available from a daily Days Since Significant rainfall report put out by Oregon Department of Forestry. Wind Sp: For planning enter the predicted wind speed. For accomplishment enter the actual wind speed. 10 HR: Enter the average 10HR fuel moisture for the unit. This measurement should be taken from the total depth of the fuel profile. 1000 HR: Enter the 1000hr fuel moisture. Meth: Enter the method in which 1000hr fuel moisture was obtained. N for NFDRs (RAWS), A for ADJ-th and W for oven dried measurements. Fuel Loading: Obtained from a photo series or transect. 0 - 1/4": Tons per acre for 0 to 1/4" fuel size class. 1/4 - 1": Tons per acre for 1/4 to 1" fuel size class. 1 - 3": Tons per acre for 1 to 3" fuel size class. 3 - 9": Tons per acre for 3 to 9" fuel size class. 9 - 20": Tons per acre for 9 to 20" fuel size class. 20"+: Tons per acre for 20"+ fuel size class. Duff Depth: Enter the average duff depth to the closest tenth inch. This completes all of the entry's that have to be made for ACOST3. The spreadsheet immediately calculates the tons per acre and total tons consumed. By moving to the right in the spreadsheet you can see by size class the tons consumed per acre as well as tons of duff per acre consumed. In the stand alone program it is necessary to press the F1 key to calculate the results. The spreadsheet is set up to accommodate ten units. If you wish to have a larger number of units unprotect the spreadsheet and do a Fill Down across the entire length of the spreadsheet. To unprotect the spreadsheet type BURN, then make the necessary adjustments and reprotect the spreadsheet. PCOST2 DATA ENTRY Pile Shape Code: Enter the shape code number for the pile type. The Directive contains descriptions of all seven pile types and the associated measurements that are needed to calculate each type. Major Pile Species: Enter the correct code from the Wood Species list at the bottom of the spreadsheet. %: Enter the percentage of the major species entered in the previous cell. This can range from 50 to 100 percent. An entry must be made in this cell. Second Species: If the pile or piles has a second species of material 25 percent or greater enter the correct code from the wood species list at the bottom of the spreadsheet. Pile Dimensions in Feet: Enter the required dimensions depending on the chosen pile type, note some pile types require more measurements than others. Piles Per Acre: Enter the average piles per acre that this pile type represents. This is an optional entry and is used to calculate total unit tonnage. Unit Acres: Enter the number of acres that this pile type represents. This is an optional entry and is used to calculate total unit tonnage. Pile Wood Volume Cu ft: No entry, this value is calculated for you. Tons Per Pile: No entry, this value is calculated for you. Unit Total Tons: No entry, this value is calculated for you if entries were made in the Piles Per Acre and Unit Acres cells.
