American Forests has administered the National Register of Big Trees since 1940.
Oregon's history in the Big Tree Program isn't quite as clear, but information about the
program dates back into the 1950s. Perhaps the most notable event in Oregon's Big Tree
history was the Douglas-fir war between Oregon and Washington,
which began just after the Columbus Day Storm in 1962 and continued until ... well ... it
may not be over! But for the time being, Oregon's on top.
